Weird Day.....

I am feeling sort of weird today.....I'm tired but excited.  So who knows, there may be something in the air or the "universe" going on.....we'll see what this week and next bring....

I had leftover fish from Sunday and a La Tortilla Factory healthy 50 calorie tortilla this morning for breakfast.  I was totally stuffed, but was starving when I ate it, I think I waited to long to eat breakfast so I woofed it down.  I got a case of the burps from eating too fast....but what an awesome breakfast.....and that along with my coffee (with full milk and agave nectar - 2 cups) made up about 280 calories.....full of protein and filled me up!

As I put the last bite in my mouth, my husband looks at me and says...wow! that was a big breakfast for you!....it's funny, since a few months ago, this would have been a micro-snack....opener for a pig out......

I am mentally talking myself into the "I think I can mode".  I am still doing the C25K program, still stuck on week 4, I have no managed to be able to run the entire week 4 program.  (5 minute warm-up, 3 minute run, 90 second walk, 5 minute run, 2 1/2 minute walk, repeat 3 minute run, 90 second walk, 5 minute run, 5 minte cooldown)

I am not moving on to week 5 until I can get week 4 without working myself up before going in.

After my run today, I have training with Larry.  He is really pushing me to my limits lately, but it's great.  I notice that with the weight I have already lost, I can do more for longer, I can jump, jog, and lunge easier.....

I'm trying to figure out what kind of slime sort of cooking I'm going to make this week.  I think it will be split pea soup.....but I haven't totally made up my mind.

Tonight we are having shake and bake chicken for dinner....yummmmmmmmy!

Ok..."universe" get on with it, so I can stop feeling like something is going to happen.....

wish me luck, 2 hours and I go for 2 hours straight at the gym!  YIKES!!!!

Results: - Shampoo test

So here's the picture of my leg and results....I only left the bandaids on a little over 24hours, just because they were on my leg and kept wanting to come off.

from left to right 1-4

So...

They all left a reddish spot on my leg, the V05 left the lightest sport and the Pantene conditioner left a sort of red spot.

About an hour later the VO5 and Pantene conditioner sports were gone the WEN spot was still there, but the Pantene shampoo sport actually welted up, like a blister...awesome.

This morning I looked at my thigh and the only red spot left is where the Pantene shampoo was.  So I guess I am "sensitive" to shampoo....

We'll see what the derm says tomorrow when I go back for results....

Yay!

Skin tests - different shampoos...

So the Dr. wanted me to "test" different shampoos on my skin, to see which one I have a reaction too.  So the test is, put some shampoo on a bandaid, and put bandaid on skin on thigh and leave for 48 hours.

So I did and here are pictures documenting....

Here's my clean thigh:
Ok, so with flash and light, it came out looking like the surface of the sun!

Here are the test subjects:

Wen, Pantene Shampoo, Pantene Conditionar and Alberto V05

And here is a picture of my thigh with badaids....I had to put shipping tape over the entire test section since the bandaids kept threatening to move.

Love the plastic wrapped lard look!  I'll probably have an allergic reaction to the tape!

So I'm going through the motions, but.......also last week I went to get chemicals for the hot tub...

Yes you heard right, hot tub.  I talked to the lady at the store and showed her my back...she says: "I could have saved you a visit to the Dr.  I know exactly what that is.  The water in your tub is growing bacteria, and when you get in, it's warm and your pores open up, then you pound the bacteria into your open pores with the jets, then when you get out, the pores close trapping the bacteria."  So needless to say that made sense to me, she told me I had been using the hot tub and not working the ozone, and heater correctly, I kept adding chemicals, so it was just brewing bacteria...AWESOME!  We changed the water out and now have use and treatment instructions.

We'll see how the skin tests go.  You never know....I may still have an excuse to not wash my hair...  heeeeeee!

New Find....mmmmmmmmm mmmmmmm good!

I found these at Trader Joe's....if you like chicken wings these are the bomb.  I just had my first sampling, next time I have them I will add a little hot sauce to them to make them more tangy and spicey!

I just saw this...laughed out loud and had to post!

From the OH website, here is a list of things to take with you to the hospital for surgery.....

Hospital List for Your Weight Loss Surgery Courtesy of Moni
  • Lip balm / chap stick…for the dry lips when you can’t have ice chips
  • Baby wipes or antibacterial wipes to freshen up
  • Trial size baby lotion or favorite lotion
  • Small shampoo and conditioner
  • Brush, hair ties
  • Toothbrush and paste …the hospital provides some but it tastes horrible
  • Deodorant
  • Insurance card and living will or health care proxy, medication list
  • Your own pillow w/colored case (this will be handy for the ride home too)
  • Loose clothes to wear home and a good pair of non slip sole slip on shoes…you will hate to bend over to put on shoes
  • Camera in case you want to document the journey …this is an optional item
  • Phone numbers in case you want to call family/friends
  • Sanitary napkins (a lot of women will start their cycle right after surgery)
  • Eye covering (if light bothers you), earplugs (if noise bothers you)
  • Pictures of family or loved ones…This is an optional item
  • Small fan …this is an optional item
  • Get some type of long wooden spoon or something you can wrap toilet tissue around. If that doesn't work, get a family member to help wipe.
  • A robe and house shoes to walk in the hall after surgery
  • Some reading material like magazines…you won’t get through a book with all the drugs they have you on.
  • CPAP machine (if Dr. requires it)
  • Albuterol rescue inhaler
So all of this is normal...but here's my favorite....and NO!  I did not do this, nor did I have the need to do this....

  • Get some type of long wooden spoon or something you can wrap toilet tissue around. If that doesn't work, get a family member to help wipe.
Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.....I would have never thought to do that....I guess it makes sense if you can't get down there because of incision pain...Thank goodness I didn't need to go to this extreme......

Ok I'm still laughing......

Week 6: Woooooooo-hoooooooooooooooooooooooooo

So....drum roll please!!!!

I lost........

3.6LBS!!!!

I am so excited.....I had to contain my excitement a little since my husbands weight loss trend went in the opposite direction this week....(he gained 5 lbs!).  I know I shouldn't be happy he gained, but I am secretly re-comforted that I made the right choice in having this surgery and using it as a Weight loss tool.

This week I had a few days I ate more than 800 calories, I even had 1 day at 1000 calories, and then I had a few days of eating less than 750 calories. So I'm wondering if the old WW secret weight loss tool works....you guys remember...."The Wendie Plan".  I'm going to try and research a little more on calorie cycling to see if it actually works....

In the meantime...I am doing the happy dance, drinking my protein shake in a little bit and off to spin class.....woo-hooo....I am so happy....

This is absolutely delish! It is a must have and try.....

I said I was going to try, I made a few changes to make due with stuff I had at home. I made it in the medium lasagna pan, I cut it into 6 pretty large pieces, about 3X3.  Oh and the cream cheese I used was the onion/chive flavor (it's the one I had at home).  Not bad for 345 calories......

this is the original recipe from eggface, her blog..http://theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com/2007/09/cooking-experiment.html

Shelly's Shepherd's Pie (without potatoes)
http://theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com/2007/09/cooking-experiment.html
1 Tablespoon Olive Oil
1 Large Onion, chopped
1 pound Ground Beef
1 Large Carrot, grated
1/2 teaspoon Thyme
1 teaspoon chopped fresh Parsley
1 clove Garlic, minced
Salt & Pepper to taste
1 Tablespoon Soy Sauce

Topping:
1 large Egg
2 Tablespoons Butter
2 Tablespoons Flour (I use Spelt)
1 cup Milk
4 ounces Cream Cheese
1/2 cup Ricotta Cheese
Salt & Pepper to taste

Preheat oven to 350. Heat oil in skillet and saute onion till golden. Remove and set aside. Saute ground beef and cook till no pink is seen. Drain any fats. Add onions back, grated carrot, thyme, garlic, parsley, S&P and soy sauce. Cook for 1 minute. Pour into casserole dish.

In a medium bowl, lightly beat the egg and set aside. In a small saucepan, melt 2 tablespoons butter over medium-high heat. Whisk in the flour and cook, whisking often, until the mixture is smooth, about 30 seconds. Slowly whisk in the milk and cook until thickened. Lower the heat to low and stir in the cream cheese and ricotta. Salt and pepper to taste. Whisk a spoon of the cheese sauce into the reserved eggs until smooth. Whisk the egg mixture into the cheese sauce in the saucepan.

Pour the sauce over the meat in the baking dish. Bake until the top is lightly browned. 40 to 45 minutes. Let cool for 10 minutes before cutting.

Random ramblings.......

It is Thursday already, I can't believe it....tomorrow weigh in.....

We'll see how this week goes.  I have been working out hard again, I will have my trainer do the "pincher" fat measurements tomorrow so that I can have another number to track, that way if my weight doesn't go down as much as I want, I can see other positives like fat or inches going down.

I feel thinner today for whatever reason, especially since yesterday I "carb" loaded....or had more carbs than I've had in a while.  I think my body was asking me for some carbs, after mad spin class, and weigh training.....

I discovered a couple of good low carb websites:
http://theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com/ - Shelly had WLS a few years ago and has created a wonderful resource for all of us, she also has some pretty neat recipeis and product reviews.
I even made this: Shelly's Shepherd's Pie (without potatoes).....smells good....
http://theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com/2007/09/cooking-experiment.html
I'll totally post a review and instructions on my tweaks once I taste....

http://www.genaw.com/lowcarb/chicken_recipes.html - I am trying out the chile chicken monterey next week....should be good and spicy.....

So off to the grocery store to buy next weeks food....One of the best things about this surgery is the savings at the grocery store....we've cut our spending by almost 3/4, since I'm not buying as much food or booze.....

I'll let you know how tomorrow goes....should be a good week.  At least I feel like it's been a good week...we'll see....

Update on Rash

So in case anyone wanted to know where the rash expedition ended up....I finally got in to see the dermatologist and was waiting for a you have a fungus or some weird condition.....

Apparently I am allergic to my shampoo or a shampoo.....which shampoo is to be discovered....

In the meantime, since it looks like it a very strong allergic reaction, that I spread from where my hair falls on my back and chest to my legs and arms......

So I have to put topical steroid cream on it...

For 4 days, I have to put it on, put moist dressings on it (which means I'll look like a mummy) for 30 minutes and reapply....my husband is going to be thrilled....NOT!

Then 10 days of just ointment 3 times a day.....

In the meantime I have to test the 2 shampoos I've used in the last 6 months (WEN and Pantene) and Alberto VO5 (aparantly the basic in the world of shampoos) - patch testing, and see how my skin reacts to each.....he's hoping I won't have a reaction to the Alberto VO5.....the patch testing is basically putting the shampoo on the pad of a band-aid and putting it on a place on your body that doesn't have a current rash.....leave it for 48 hours, take off band-aids and draw a circle around band-aid site....watch for another 48 hours....I guess I'll take pictures to document....

Awesome....If I am allergic to even Alberto VO5, I think I'll go rastra.....grow some dreads and stop washing my hair for a while.....

Another awesome discovery, I have 2 red spots on my back, they also itch and could possibly be part of the rash or (worst case scenario) could be skin cancer.

So I have an appointment with the dermatologist again next Monday, if the spots are still the same size after treatment for allergy, they will be biopsied......So I guess I'll update in a week....hopefully my itching will stop!

Product Review: Click Protein Shake.....reward for snake attack!

So I went for a walk today in the trails around the house.  I was so looking forward to some "alone" time, time to listen to my music, enjoy the sun, and  it was going to be about 1 hour 45 minutes to myself....so off I go....

I started on the trail be the house, it goes slightly uphill and it is a pretty wooded area, lots of fallen leaves, and a trail....I was at the top of the first hill about 15 minutes in, just before it started back downhill, and about 2 feet in front of me was a giant (at least I though so) rattle snake....it was coiled up but when it saw me, it uncoiled and tried to stand on it's tail as it lunged at me.....it was long and heavy, and it actually lost it's balance as it was hissing and rattling at me.......so it lost its balance and toppled over and turned and kept hissing at me.....

MAN OH MAN!!!  I didn't know I could run so fast....I did a total 180 and started running in the oposite direction....from where I came...I almost crapped my pants.....

Still running downhill, my heart is beating, I am assuming every branch is a snake....I am down and back on the main street in less than 5 minutes.....ha! and I thought I had a good pace uphill.....

I called the husband to tell him, his first question was "did you take a picture?"  Uhm...can you say a-hole?!!!

So anyway, he was at the gym, I walked over, did 30 minutes on the elliptical and came home....I rewarded myself with a Click shake....

Now for the product review....

A few weeks ago I ordered the samples from www.drinkclick.com

I got a Vanilla Latte one and a Mocha Latte

So since I wanted an afternoon treat I figured today would be the day to try it....

I filled my blender with ice to about the 6 oz line, then added water to the 14oz line, added my sample packet of Vanilla Latte and turned on the blender....

OMG what a delicious treat, it felt like I was cheating, it was like a frapuccino (frozen coffee).....I am going to have to order some powder......but first I'll try the mocha to see which one I like best....

It tasted like a vanilla latte milk shake......for all of those struggling with their protein this is great!

Update on weigh in....

So I was talking to my husband, and we were discussing totals...he's lost 27 pounds to my 24.5, so percentage wise I am still ahead....(which made me feel better)....

Also talked to my trainer and we are going to start measuring body fat percentages, I have been doing a ton of cardio and back to doing weights, so I am building muscle and losing inches.....so soon, I will be a metabolic machine!!!

Week 5: A loss...YAY....BUT FRUSTRATED!

So this week I lost 1.5 lbs...so YAY!!!! that makes 24.5 lbs in 5 weeks!!!!

BUT....I am so freakin' frustrated!!!!!

my husband who is also overweight, decided to start dieting when I went in for surgery....he steps on the scale this week and drops 4lbs!  SERIOUSLY!!! WTF!!!!  He is down 29lbs in the same 5 weeks.....

I know that men lose faster than women, I know he hasn't screwed up his metabolism with a lifetime of "dieting" and hormones (birth control, PCOS, etc)....but still!!!!   GRRRR

He eats 2000-2200 calories a day, he gives himself weekends off (eats whatever, as much as he wants and has his beer and wine), and works out like a loon.....

Me....well I eat 700-800 calories, try to stay with mainly protein, don't drink alcohol, and also work out like a crazy woman......so what gives!??!$!$#%#@!#@!!!!!!

Oh....I know that it isn't a competition, but I'm competitive in nature.....so I can't help myself......

Pheww.....breathe.......take a deep breath.....

I am going to enjoy my loss....heck! 24.5 lbs in 5 weeks....so I will celebrate and not worry about him (easier said than done, I know)......

A loss is a loss is a loss!

I am so sore and pooped today...

So yesterday I went to do my C25K routine.  I was meant to do W3D1, however I clicked on the wrong podcast and ended up with W4D1.....so I tried my hardest, and had to stop a few times during the 5 minute run, but hey....I "almost" did it, after that I had 1 hour training session.....so today my muscles are sore and I am feeling hungrier....so good, my metabolism is kicking up....yay!  Probably doesn't help that yesterday I only ate 740 calories.....

I'm going to eat a little more today, and will go for spin class this afternoon.

Tomorrow I'll be back to C25K, doing W4D1 again, I'll just skip week 3 and repeat week 4 until I can do it without stopping.....

Tonight....shake and bake pork chops......mmmmmm with lime juice.....

Ok guys....here's the geek in me! IT IS A NUMBERS GAME!

For those of you who know me, know that I am all about the math.  I love numbers and for a while I have been trying to figure out, why I didn't lose weight just following a normal diet.  The truth is that all of us obese people have so much stored energy, that if we ate zero calories for the next few months, our bodies would live off of our reserves for all that time.

So here's the math....

Each pound is worth 3500 calories.  So in order for me to lose a pound I have to have a calorie deficit of 3500 calories.Right?

First you have to identify you resting metabolic rate.

Definitions:

BMR and RMR are estimates of how many calories you would burn if you were to do nothing but rest for 24 hours. They represent the minimum amount of energy required to keep your body functioning, including your heart beating, lungs breathing, and body temperature normal.
  • BMR stands for Basal Metabolic Rate, and is synonymous with Basal Energy Expenditure or BEE. BMR measurements are typically taken in a darkened room upon waking after 8 hours of sleep; 12 hours of fasting to ensure that the digestive system is inactive; and with the subject resting in a reclining position.
  • RMR stands for Resting Metabolic Rate, and is synonymous with Resting Energy Expenditure or REE. RMR measurements are typically taken under less restricted conditions than BMR, and do not require that the subject spend the night sleeping in the test facility prior to testing.
The Harris-Benedict equation for BMR:

  • For men: (13.75 x w) + (5 x h) - (6.76 x a) + 66
  • For women: (9.56 x w) + (1.85 x h) - (4.68 x a) + 655
The Mufflin equation for RMR:

  • For men: (10 x w) + (6.25 x h) - (5 x a) + 5
  • For women: (10 x w) + (6.25 x h) - (5 x a) - 161
Where:

w = weight in kg
h = height in cm
a = age
or you can cheat and just go here to check what your RMR is:
http://www.shapeup.org/interactive/rmr1.php
So according to the calculator my current RMR at 280lbs is 1941 calories.  So I'll round down to 1900 in my calculations.
Here's the real math:
Current Weight 280 lbs Goal weight 180 lbs Excess Weight 100 lbs Total Excess Energy        350,000 calories

So I have 350,000 calories saved up that I can use to survive on.   I think this is the key into seeing life through an overweight persons's eyes.  Sometimes regular nutritionists don't get why a 300 lbs person, eating a 1900 calorie diet doesn't lose weight....well...they may, but at a pretty slow rate, see we use those 1900 calories to live on, and don't start using our stored energy reserves.  In my case 350,000 calories!!!

So here is my daily calorie burn:

Resting RMR: 1900calories

Exercise 300 calories

Total Calories burned/day  2200 calories

So if I consume 1900 calories per day:

Total Calories Consumed: 1900 calories

Total Calorie Deficit per day 300 calories

(total calories burned per day (2200 calories - 1900 calories eaten)

Total Defecit per week: 2100 calories (300 calories a day times 7 days)

Total weight loss per week: .06lbs  (2100 calories divided by 3500 calories)

It would take me 1150 days to lose 100 lbs (350,000 total calorie "saved up" divided by 300 calories a day), you can imagine how disheartening that can be.  Also think that this is with doing at least 300 calories worth of exercise a day, and eating no more than 1900 calories a day.

No look at what my rates are after WLS, and I think this is the KEY to success.  I am currently eating between 800-900 calories so let's round up to 900.

Total Calories Consumed: 900 calories

Total Calorie Deficit per day 1300 calories

(total calories burned per day (2200 calories - 900 calories eaten)

Total Defecit per week: 9100 calories (1300 calories a day times 7 days)

Total weight loss per week: 2.6lbs (9100 calories divided by 3500 calories)

It would take 270 (350,000 "saved up" calories divided by 1300 calories a day) days assuming that my RMR stays the same and that my consumption doesn't go up beyond 900 calories a day.

I think that is the reason weight loss surgery is successful.  There is no way I could have been satisfied with 900 calories pre surgery, all the talking heads and "experts" seem to think that eating a balanced diet is enough to lose weight. It is, but we can see that at a very slow rate.  So slow that it is easy to give up and just compound the problem.

With my new tiny stomach, I am full with very little, my body is forced to "feed" on it's stored energy and burn those extra calories.

The one thing these numbers don't take into account, is that weight loss will slow as we lose weight or it may speed up, depending on how much muscle we build.  Muscle increases your RMR and if you don't build muscle and just lose weight, your RMR will also decrease, seeing as it takes less energy to move a lesser body mass.....

I may get into more calculated equations, but for now, it helps to know that I should be losing between 2-3 lbs a week....hopefully....We'll see on Friday.....
